My first attempt at Cabbage

I really enjoy trying to grow new things. This year I tried cabbage for the first time. I decided to get serious about feeding the soil and WOW what a difference it makes!
At the time I harvested this cabbage (November 28) the ones they were selling in the shops were only half the size and cost about $4. Based on that I reckoned this one was worth about 6 bucks. We cut it in half and gave half to a mate up the road who sometimes drops in with some fresh fish.
We got 2 or 3 meals out of that half cabbage, including a fresh coleslaw, a lamb neck stew (with cabbage of course – done in the pressure cooker), and something else which I can't remember now. Altogether we got 3 green gabbages and 2 purple ones, altogether valued at about $16-18 — not bad for a $3.50 punnet of seedlings.
However if I'm to be completely honest about it, it also took about $1 worth of fertiliser plus a half bag of compost which cost about $5/bag, then there's all the watering...
Still worth the effort I reckon. Very satisfying of course, plus we have the peace of mind knowing there were no sprays used.
I think I'll try that again...

  1. Wowee Dave that's a monster cabbage. I've never seen one that big before. I've never tried to grow them as we don't eat cabbage that much. I love cabbage but Michelle's not overly keen on it & doesn't like the smell of them cooking.

  2. Some of the best cabbage I've eaten was RAW. We got served part of a small cabbage and a bowl of mayonaise as an entre in a Japanese restaurant once (it was a small Yakitori bar ie. Kebab shop). It seemed pretty weird to me at the time but it was surprisingly delicious and pretty healthy too, so long as you went easy on the mayo. You should try it some time.

  3. WOW! That buggah is big! Must be the air and soil down there which makes things healthy. Wish I at least had a yard to do something in...

  4. I've been gardening for a few years now but I'm still amazed at the variety of different foods that all grow out of the same soil... the whole system's brilliantly designed!

    Don't know much about chinese eggs rolls though but they do sound interesting. I might have to get Izumi onto it when my next batch of cabbages come ready.
    Some of the best things happen by accident...
